"Winterreise" - Franz Schubert

Winterreise (Winter Journey) is a monumental song cycle for voice and piano composed by Franz Schubert in 1827. Widely considered the pinnacle of the Romantic Lieder repertory, it consists of 24 songs setting the melancholic, existential poems of German poet Wilhelm Müller. Schubert himself famously referred to them as a cycle of "horrifying songs" (schauerlicher Lieder). They capture the profound psychological unraveling of a rejected lover embarking on a solitary, aimless journey through a brutal winter landscape. Fittingly, we have programmed this in our January concert !

Lenthall Concerts is pleased to have Roderick Williams OBE a world famous international baritone to perform this work. In Lieder the piano is much more than a mere background accompaniment. It acts as an equal partner to the singer, setting the scene, depicting physical action, and portraying the inner psychological emotions of the poetry. Ben Costello joins Roderick Williams in this demanding piano accompaniment.
