Tenor & Horn
Music written for tenor voice and French horn combines the expressive qualities of the human voice with the noble, lyrical sound of the horn. This pairing is relatively rare but highly effective, often used to evoke themes of nature, heroism, or introspection - all features of tonight's programme. The tenor's bright, agile timbre complements the horn's warm, rounded tone, allowing for rich dialogue between voice and instrument. One of the most notable examples is Benjamin Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings (1943), a song cycle that sets English poetry to music.
This concert features two works for this combination. Schubert's Auf dem Strom (On the River ) - a poignant lied set to words by Ludwig Rellstab for tenor, horn, and `piano, expressing longing and farewell, blending lyrical beauty with rich Romantic emotion. Korth's Midnight Rain is a composition adding in a string quartet and piano to the combination, set to words by Edward Thomas, was commissioned by the London Chamber Orchestra and the Guild of Horn Players in 2020.
On Wenlock Edge by Vaughan Williams sets Housman’s poetry to music, blending voice, piano, and string quartet in a haunting, windswept reflection on mortality.

Artists

Nicholas Korth
Horn, Composer
Nicholas Korth, “subtlest of first horns”, has held the position of Co-principal Horn with the BBC Symphony Orchestra since 2000. In this capacity he has performed in many ‘Prom’ concerts at the Royal Albert Hall (including several first and last nights), toured throughout the world and been involved in numerous radio and TV broadcasts. He first had lessons with his mentor, the distinguished horn soloist Ifor James, at the age of eleven. Four years later he joined Ifor in Germany for a further five years study at the Musikhochschule in Freiburg. He has also worked in Norway as a member of the Oslo Philharmonic under Mariss Jansons in the early nineties, and was Principal Horn of the Royal Ballet Sinfonia from 1997 to 2000. As a composer, Nicholas has a fascination with the world of natural harmony. This is reflected in his series of compositions, Harmoniae Naturales, which feature the extraordinary sounds of overtone singing. He lives in Hertfordshire with violinist Deborah Schlenther and their family.

James Gilchrist
Tenor
James Gilchrist began his working life as a doctor, turning to a full-time career in music in 1996. His musical interest was fired at a young age, singing first as a chorister in the choir of New College, Oxford, and later as a choral scholar at King’s College, Cambridge. Gilchrist's extensive concert repertoire has seen him perform in major concert halls throughout the world with conductors including Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Sir Roger Norrington, Bernard Labadie, Harry Christophers, Harry Bicket,Masaaki Suzuki and the late Richard Hickox.
