Schubert "Trout Quintet"

Raphael Wallfisch (cello), Elizabeth Wallfisch (viola), Thomas Martin (double bass), Michael Bochmann (violin), Simon Callaghan (piano)

25February 2024

Mozart, Brahms and Schubert

This programme brings together three enduring masterpieces of the chamber music repertoire, each showcasing the unique intimacy and expressive power of music-making between friends and equals. Never more so than with our performer here.

Mozart's Piano Quartet in E-flat major, K.493 combines Classical elegance with remarkable emotional depth, allowing piano and strings to converse with wit, lyricism and warmth. Brahms's Cello Sonata No. 2 in F major, Op.99 offers a striking contrast, pairing sweeping Romantic passion with moments of profound tenderness in one of the composer's finest chamber works. The concert concludes with Schubert's much-loved "Trout" Quintet, whose distinctive scoring—including double bass—creates a luminous, joyful sound world. Famous for its variations on Schubert's song Die Forelle ("The Trout"), the work overflows with memorable melodies, vitality and optimism.

Performed by Raphael Wallfisch, his wife Elizabeth Wallfisch, Thomas Martin, Michael Bochmann and Simon Callaghan, these regular players at our concerts will give us a truly memorable and enjoyable evening.
